  • Employer engagement & deliverables: How can we be most helpful to employers and meet their workforce needs?
  • Internal & external awareness: How can a talent attraction project serve as a catalyst to shift perception internally and rewrite the narrative about a community on the national stage?

Becoming a Chooseable Small Town

Speaker: Rebecca Undem, Director, Growing Small Towns

"If you've seen one small town, you've seen every small town." Quotes like this diminish the incredible opportunity that each community has to dig into what makes them special and create a personalized approach to attracting both visitors and newcomers to their small towns. In this session, Rebecca will share the ideas and tactics she's used to help her rural community of just 1,800 people be more attractive. People have so many choices; this session will help your community (even the smallest of towns) become more "chooseable".

In this session you’ll learn how to reframe the value proposition of small towns, apply a person-centered approach to attracting visitors & newcomers, and use storytelling to take back the narrative about small communities

So how do you go about convincing Gen Z that they have options in your area? Step one is to show them what you’ve got!

In this session, you’ll learn about two Michigan-based summer intern programs, how to get companies in your area to see the value and get their interns to participate, and why every single interaction matters in talent attraction.

What are the most pressing challenges facing those of us working in talent attraction?

Say it with us now: Housing! Child care! Diversity and Inclusion!

This panel discussion will bring together experts on these critical issues to share thoughts, tips, and visions, and provide ample space for audience discussion and Q&A. Let’s tackle these issues together.

The Talent Attraction Summit is for any economic development, chamber of commerce, tourism, or government professional that wants to change the way places attract talent. It’s also open to any person that is passionate about their community and making it better.

If that describes you, we'd love to meet you.

Seating is limited, and applications close June 1 (or whenever we fill up) so get your application in sooner rather than later!

Here are the goals we have for our time together:

  • Build a national network of colleagues to help with tricky situations in economic development. Our communities and challenges are similar in many ways, and we can help each other.

  • To learn about what others are doing. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Maybe someone has a great solution for something you’re working on. Let’s share and problem-solve together.

  • Challenge ourselves to grow and innovate. This industry is evolving. We’re at the forefront. How do we envision the next iteration of talent attraction and economic development? What can we dream up and bring to life?

  • To explore Flint. This will be fun and productive. Flint has (accurately) been described as the “frontier of economic development.” It’s a place where resurgence and innovation can be seen every day. Leaders and community members here are excited to share their stories and their city with you. And you’re going to love it.

  • A carefully curated list of attendees. Only people that want to be there for the right reasons will be accepted. (Want to join us? Apply here!)

  • We’ll be focused on talent attraction and the pieces of economic development that go with it — marketing, placemaking, surprising newcomers, connection, partnership, etc. If you've ever attended a conference and left thinking, "Where is the talent-focused content?" then this event will be a welcome change of pace.
